Build a series of triangles, for instance, to hold a bridge in place, or affix an arch to add even more support for your road. With only metal planks and guy-wires to hold your contraptions in place, you have to make smart use of your materials to ensure that the entire structure doesn't topple as soon as you begin.Ī handy "best practices" tutorial teaches you the fundamentals of architecture. Building a bridge is no easy task, though physics are a constant and punishing presence, forcing you to consider the impact of gravity as you build rickety structures. The goal is to guide a self-driving forklift full of cute little stick figures from the entry point to a faraway exit-all while avoiding turrets, leaping over acidic lakes, and triggering switches. This scene means nothing if you aren't familiar with that game.and it's just a quick nostalgia jab for those who are.Īs the name implies, Bridge Constructor Portal has you building a series of bridges in the facility made famous in Portal. During one such segment, a picture of Portal's famous cake appears on a computer screen while an instrumental version of "Still Alive" plays over the loudspeakers. Periodic cutscenes borrow familiar artifacts from previous games, but do little with these props other than make you fondly remember happier days. She's there to greet you with an insult at the beginning of some stages, and then you're left on your own in a bleak and bland test chamber. GlaDOS is back to make light of your shortcomings, but her insults feel like diluted copies of familiar quips, lacking the clever tongue-lashings that she used to so easily dish out. The story in Bridge Constructor Portal is little more than a collection of references to the previous Portal games. Even worse: I encountered a game-breaking bug that completely halted my progress at the home stretch. But neither the story nor the puzzles capture your imagination, resulting in a predictable slog that grows more tedious the deeper you get into the adventure. It sounds like the setup for another delicious brain-teaser that will tickle your funny bone while pushing your logic muscles. GlaDOS, an uncaring-though-humorous AI, greets you at the beginning of many levels, setting the stage for the plentiful puzzles that lay before you. Yeah I know the voice is just a robotic AI, but the line delivery is spot on.Bridge Constructor Portal leans heavily upon its iconic forebears. There is no notable soundtrack, however the various sound effects are well done and the voice acting for GLaDOS is perfect. I’m no developer, but I’d venture to guess that my PS4 Pro should be able to handle this without a hitch. The big disappointment here is that despite the simple visuals, performance still takes a big hit if there happens to be some mass destruction. Nothing fancy or highly detailed, but the color palette is bright and shadows do cast dynamically wherever you construct a road. The graphics are simple, but they’re clean and well done. None of the levels feel impossible, but there are a decent chunk that will have you scrapping your project and restarting. Vehicles seen by the targeting laser are marked for disqualification … followed by rapid disassembly.” There are 60 levels in total, but it doesn’t really start ramping up until mid way through. One of my favorite lines was: “This test includes, sentry turrets. Odds are you’ll blow through the first 20 levels as GLaDOS teaches you the ropes with her classic back handed compliments, sarcasm and dry AI jokes. Everything is just a little slower with the controller.Ĭontroller aside, the levels are well done and do get challenging. There were a handful of times that I selected or deleted the wrong item and if that item is attached to others it will delete that section. You’ll need to zoom in and out a lot to try and get around quicker or try and select specific areas, especially when the bridges get bigger and more complicated. There isn’t a story or anything, but there is a sense of progression since every 10 levels you get a promotion to handle more difficult sections.įor the most part using a controller is doable, but of course it lacks precision and quick actions. You’ll utilize various portals, jump pads, speed ramps and companion cubes to get your lemmings safely across various death traps. You’re required to get the drivers and their equipment from point A to point B safely. Not only is it one of the best bridge constructor type games I have ever played, it also happens to be a really fun Portal game.Īs I’m sure you can guess, you’re tasked to construct bridges for the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Bridge Constructor Portal was another one of those that had me scratching my head until I actually got my hands on it. We’re seeing a trend lately of game mash-ups that seem like they wouldn’t work very well, like the recent Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
